Bone Disorders

What is a Bone Disorder?

If your bones become deficient or sometimes diseased there is a risk of fracture, therefore bone health is vital. Disorders of the hormones that control the bones are common.

What causes Bone Disorders?

The most common disorder is a lack of vitamin D, a hormone made by the skin in response to sunshine. This causes a condition of weak bones, which is very easy to treat. If low vitamin D is untreated, it gives pain, and a risk of fracture. A lack of vitamin D can lead to a condition called hyperparathyroidism, and also increases the risks of tumors of the parathyroid glands Modern medicine uses many medicines that damage bone health and increase the risk of fractures, and there are good treatments to prevent these side-effects.

Treatment for Bone Disorders

Bone strength and the risk of fractures is affected by a number of endocrine conditions including overactivity of the parathyroid glands, excess cortisol or a lack of oestrogen/testosterone. Our specialists will perform a detailed assessment of your bone strength as part of the standard assessment for many common endocrine conditions and a tailored treatment regime will be discussed and offered depending on the underlying diagnosis.
